How  to reduce the risk of acquisition and transmission of B. cepacia complex?

The best measures for preventing the spread of B. cepacia complex are to pay attention to good personal hygiene.

The following measures should always be observed:

  • Always throw away tissues immediately after use.
  • Do not share physiotherapy or respiratory equipment, such as PEP masks, nebulizers, aerochambers, etc.
  • Use the appropriate care program for PEP masks, aerosol equipment and nebulizers to minimize contamination.
  • Do not share eating utensils, cans, cups or bottles.
  • Cover your mouth when you cough.
  • Wash your hands frequently, particularly after touching infected materials, such as sputum or saliva.
  • Avoid intimate contact with other Cystic Fibrosis patients, especially those who are infected with B. cepacia complex.

There is nothing you can do to make the risk zero. It is important to maintain your general overall health, and to follow treatment regimens, including good physiotherapy and nutrition. It is always important to follow your prescribed therapy.
